Our Story

The Book Shack was founded by Jo Kassabaum in 1979. She single-handedly ran the business for nearly forty years.  Her uncanny talent for knowing exactly which books her customers are looking for, and quickly finding them among shelves and shelves of paperbacks, only adds to the charm and small-town feel of the store.  Knowing most of her customers by first name, Jo greets them as they walk in the door.

In 2016, Jo’s granddaughter (in-law), Kristy Kassabaum, took on The Book Shack, making it a second-generation family-owned business.  Kristy hopes to maintain the charm The Book Shack has always possessed, in addition to bringing on some charm of her own.

Together, their hope is to create an atmosphere that encourages literacy and which passes on the love of reading to future generations.
